@ The Friends Center, 1501 Cherry Street, Philadelphia
Join us for a Teach-In featuring Professor Sa'ed Atshan (Swarthmore), novelist and poet Susan Abulhawa, and Mike Merryman-Lotze of the American Friends Service Committee to mark this year's series of anniversaries:
- 50 years since Israel occupied the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights.
- 100 years since the Balfour Declaration, issued by the British Empire in support of a Jewish state in historic Palestine.
- 70 years since the UN Partition Plan allotting 56% of historic Palestine for a Jewish state, which triggered the Nakba (mass displacement of Palestinians from their lands).
- 10 years since Israel began its crippling blockade of the Gaza Strip, creating an open-air prison subject to recurrent aerial bombardment.
We will screen archival footage from the 1948 Nakba followed by a panel discussion and concluding with brief presentations about Philly-area BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) campaigns in support of Palestinian rights.
This event is is part of the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights' Week of Action. It is sponsored locally by The Philadelphia Coalition for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against Israel (Philly BDS), Jewish Voice for Peace - Philadelphia, and Christian-Jewish Allies.
